History
Pithapuram is an ancient town located in the Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It has a rich historical and cultural heritage, with its roots tracing back to the Satavahana dynasty. The town is known for its temples, particularly the Sri Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is a prominent pilgrimage site. Pithapuram has been a part of various historical kingdoms, including the Chalukyas and the Kakatiyas, and later the Rajahmundry and Peddapuram estates. The town also has strong ties to literature and arts, with a history of being an important center of Telugu culture. Today, Pithapuram remains an important hub for religious and cultural activities in the region.
Government Degree College, Pithapuram was established in 2008 and commenced the academic activities with 4 programs namely BA (EHP), BSc (MPC), BSc (Zoology) and BCom (General). The college was initially accommodated in the premises of RRBhR Government Junior College, Pithapuram and Sri P Raja Gopal was the first Principal (IIncharge) of the college and Sri K Madhusudhan Reddy was the first regular Principal of the college. Later the program of BCom (Computer Applications) was introduced in the academic year 2020-21. The college later shifted to new and own premises near Padagaya Temple on 12.12.2024 after inauguration of the new and own premises of the college by Sri K Pawan Kayan garu, the Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister of AP..
Currently the college is offering 5 Undergraduate programs in Single Major System namely BA (Economics), BSc9Chemistry), BSc(Zoology), BCom (Computer Applications) and BSc (Computer Science) with sanctioned intake of 220 and student strength of 340. Over a period of time the college has achieved good results in serving the higher education needs of Pithapuram and surrounding mandals and has been a favourite among the students of this area.
With the relocation of the college to new and own prremises in December 2024, the college has witnessed overwhelming support from the local companies and philanthropists and progressing fast in the development path.
